A Guide On Drupal Installation With Softaculous
Introduction
Ready to build your Drupal website without the hassle? This tutorial will guide you through the simple process of installing Drupal using Softaculous, a user-friendly auto-installer found in cPanel hosting accounts through Smart Start Host.
Even if you’re new to website development, you’ll be able to set up a basic Drupal site in just a few minutes. Let’s get started!
Getting Started
Start by logging into cPanel, you can find access through the Smart Start Host Client Area.
Access Softaculous Apps Installer.
Drupal Installation
From the left sidebar select Drupal, if it does not appear you may search for it using the search bar to the top right of the screen.
Now that you have accessed the Drupal overview page, please click on the “Install Now” button to begin the installation process.
Afterward, you will be redirected to the “Install” page where you will need to specify the required configuration information. As you will notice the page is split into four sections. In order to keep it consistent, we will review each of the sections starting with the first “Software Setup” section.
The first thing you need to select is the installation version. At the time this tutorial is being written, Softaculous supports Drupal 10.3.1, 10.0.11, 9.5.11, 8.9.20, 7.101 and 6.38. We strongly recommend you always choose the latest available version unless you strictly require another one.
Next, you will need to determine the application URL settings:
- Choose Protocol – From this dropdown menu you will need to select the protocol over which your Drupal website will be accessed. Please note that in order for the secure HTTPS protocol to function properly it requires a valid SSL certificate installed on your domain name. If such is not detected on the selected domain, Softaculous will display a warning message right below this field.
- Choose Domain – From this dropdown menu you will need to select the domain or subdomain you would like the installation to be performed onto. The dropdown will list all domains, addon domains, and subdomains currently configured in your cPanel.
- In Directory – In this field, you can define a specific directory where the installation to take place. If you would like the installation to be performed directly under the root folder ( i.e. https://yourdomain.com), please make sure to leave this field blank. Alternatively, if you wish Drupal to be installed under a subdirectory (e.g. https://yourdomain.com/blog), please make sure to specify the subdirectory under this field.
Below the URL settings, you will notice the “Cron Jobs” fields where you will be able to specify the timing for the CRON jobs required by the Drupal software. As you will notice they are already pre-configured, therefore you may just leave them as they are unless you require them to run in a specific time frame.
By scrolling below, you will see the “Site Settings” and “Admin Account” sections.
The “Site Settings” section includes only one “Site Name” field. This represents the main title of your website and the text which will be displayed in the browser title bar. The value entered here can be changed anytime in the future.
Intuitively, from the “Admin Account” section you will be able to configure your Drupal Admin details:
- Admin Username – In this field, you will need to specify the admin username for your Drupal backend.
- Admin Password – In this field, you will need to enter the password for your Admin account. Please make sure to select a strong password as using insecure login credentials may affect your website security and make it vulnerable to various attacks. You can use the password generator (“Key” icon) to create a strong password.
- Admin Email – In this field, you will need to enter the desired administrative email address which will be used for all update notifications, password reset requests, etc.
Click install.
